Route 2: Folk Museum

Early in the morning, we drove to the woodcarving master’s house. He received us warmly. Of course, without further ado, we quickly asked the master to show off his carving skills. His strong arm easily struck the cleaver.

In 2012, Wu Shiwei became the apprentice of the national treasure artist Shi Zhenyang.
The teacher's sculptures of flowers, birds, and animals are each carefully crafted. They were originally not allowed to be touched, but he was willing to let us touch them.
The teacher took us to experience carving the red turtle cake mold. It turns out that carving is quite laborious, and the parts like the hands and feet of the turtle are very difficult.
Teacher Wu Shiwei not only preserves traditional skills but also continues to work hard in educational promotion. We must also learn from the teacher’s spirit of not knowing what is difficult.

The next stop was the Folk Museum. I admired many equipments for making Red Turtle Rice Cakes, which was a feast for my eyes.

The Lukang Folk Museum was originally the ancestral home of the early local prominent family, the Gu Xianrong family, built in 1919. In order to preserve the traditional culture of Lukang, the Gu family donated it in the 62nd year of the Republic of China. There are more than a thousand cultural relics from the late Qing Dynasty, the Japanese period to the early Republic of China. Each exhibition room is full of ancient relics, and some spaces have also restored the furnishings at that time.
Nowadays, we can see that stores or DIY use machines to husking rice, but if you want to know the utensils used to make turtle-shaped rice cakes in the old agricultural era, you can only read about it in books or on the internet, or you can only go to the Folk Museum to see these ancient utensils in person.
The convenience of modern mechanical equipment has replaced many traditional functions of cultural relics, and even molds can only be collected as ancient cultural relics.
The folk museum's exhibitions cover food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, entertainment, etc. In this field full of artistic value, the people and objects that create history are connected together, making the glory of the past vivid. If I didn't come here today, I would only see information about it in books or on the Internet, but not the actual product.
