Osmanthus Alley Artist Village

Osmanthus Alley Artist Village in Lukang Town has always held exhibitions and art and cultural activities. This time, the resident artist is CAI, YAN-YU teacher, a straw hat weaving craftsman. So we started our first stop of research and exploration - No. 27 CAI, YAN-YU Handmade, looking forward to getting to know Lukang Cypress Straw Hat better.

As soon as I entered the teacher's studio, I smelled the scent of rush (also known as salty grass).
We quietly admired the handmade items on the teacher's desk. Later, Teacher CAI picked up a "Cypress Straw Hat", which was very precious and rare, and began to introduce it.

Cypress Straw Hat was booming in Lukang in the early days. A professional machine is needed to plane the cypress wood into a thin slice of about 90 cm. However, due to the lack of wood, the Cypress Straw Hat has disappeared without a trace.

On that day, we were learning how to make small straw hat pendants in the workshop. We originally wanted to learn the most expensive one because handicrafts are unique. Unexpectedly, it was so difficult for us who were experiencing it for the first time.

This visit to Osmanthus Alley Artist Village was truly worthwhile.

Seven new artists debuted at Osmanthus Alley Artist Village in Lukang.

On that day, the two young girls learned the knitting techniques in the morning, so they stayed in the studio in the afternoon to knit the unfinished straw hats until the edges were finished and the straw hat pendants were completed.

On the morning of July 3, 2024, at Osmanthus Alley Artist Village (YAN-YU rush handmade studio), we visited the mysterious Cypress Straw Hat.
The teacher was holding a very rare "Cypress Straw Hat". It is said that the cypress straw hat was very popular in Lukang in the early days. The production of cypress straw hat required a professional machine to plane the cypress wood into a thin slice of about 90 cm.
It turns out that the material of the Cypress Straw Hat is the silk planed from cypress wood. The weaving method of the Cypress Straw Hat is the same as the weaving method of the rush straw hat, so we chose the most expensive DIY course today, but we couldn’t finish it in half a day.
We used rush to weave small straw hat pendants that day, but what we were most curious about was how to turn wood into silk thread?
